Human Resources Networking Group with Alum Speaker
It is time to reserve your seat for the next MT|SHRM Career Transition Group meeting, Network Your Way to a New Job. Everyone says that networking is a must to get a job in today’s world. But what does networking actually entail and how do you do it effectively? And if you don’t enjoy meeting new people, especially when—gasp! you need a job and the purpose of connecting feels disingenuous and uncomfortable—then you’re in good company.
Join us Monday, and hear from Karen Baird, a current member of our group and seasoned networker/relationship builder. Karen, a new transplant to the Nashville area, is an experienced marketing communications professional with over 20 years of service in diverse industries including nonprofit, publishing, higher education, and healthcare.
Karen honed her networking skills and confidence in approaching strangers through her decade of work at MIT, where she created a new communications function for the MIT Technology Licensing Office. The role required that Karen network with hundreds of faculty, staff, researchers, and students across the Institute as well as other universities and biotech companies.
Building relationships has always come naturally to Karen, whose close colleagues describe as “one of the best networkers I know.” However, she didn't start out feeling confident with this process, and has plenty of stories of being ghosted, putting her foot in her mouth, and otherwise feeling extremely awkward putting herself out there.
Karen will share some tips and tricks for how to take the fear out of networking. Please come prepared to share your own networking stories—the good, the bad, and the ugly! We will learn together how to network for success!
In advance of this meeting, please think of any questions you would like to be addressed. Upon joining the meeting (via Zoom), you will be asked to:
- Provide a 30 second introduction.
- Share your contact information in the chat so others will be able to connect with you (optional). We suggest your name, email address and your LinkedIn Profile URL.
- Address any questions you have in a separate chat directly to Lauren Kiproff-Downer and she will compile them for discussion during the meeting.
