Identifying and Supporting Employee-Caregivers: Employers’ Billion Dollar Challenge
Presented by Grace S. Smith, Executive Director, Organization Council on Aging of Middle Tennessee

Nearly 10 million adult children over the age of 50 care for their aging parents. Nearly 60% of family caregivers are employed; the majority work full-time. As life expectancy increases, more workers will be involved in caring for aging loved ones. One study estimates that caregiving employees cost American employers up to $33 billion in lost productivity annually as a result of absenteeism, presenteeism, workday interruptions, eldercare crises, unpaid leave and the necessity to reduce schedules from full- to part-time.

Yet employee caregivers are often invisible to employers because these workers hesitate to reveal the burdens they carry for fear of jeopardizing their jobs.

Implications for employers will be explored in detail along with ideas to help them identify and assist caregivers. Multiple resources exist to support employers in developing programs; these will be summarized and provided. Two MT|SHRM members will share their personal experiences and challenges of managing family, career and care of aging relatives.

Each attendee will be given a free copy of COA’s Directory of Services for Seniors, which provides comprehensive, impartial information about services for older adults in middle Tennessee – an invaluable resource for HR professionals who assist employee caregivers.

COA is interested in our member’s input in determining the scope of this issue in Middle Tennessee.  Please complete this short anonymous survey even if you are not able to attend this informative lunch and learn: https://app.e2ma.net/app2/survey/1403731/213067561/0b0ec8510f/
