Common Sense Tools for Accessibility in the Workplace

Presented by Lynnette Henderson, PhD, Associate Director of Adult Community Services, UCEDD Vanderbilt Kennedy Center and Donicé Kaufman, Director of Disability Integration and Development for Leadership Foundry

Disability is diverse. We don’t know what we don’t know. The law is concrete. Our perception of others is based in our fluid biases from our own evolving cultural experiences. Learning to apply a concrete law to fluid situations requires some changes in our thought processes. Where are you on these 4 levels of Diversity Development?

  • Tactical - Understanding Diversity --- Foundational Introductions
  • Operational - Appreciating Diversity --- Supervisory Skill Development
  • Strategic - Embracing Diversity --- Leading Teams Development
  • Summit - Creating Diversity --- Setting Expectations for the Organization

Come learn about 3 easy mind-set approaches that can help you and your front-line supervisors accommodate any worker with a disability:  Ask, Problem-Solve, Plan using Universal Design. Then, we will showcase some of the technology and tools that are available to meet the needs of workers with sensory, invisible (mental, emotional, and psychological issues), physical, intellectual and learning disabilities. Exercises will be woven into the presentation to help you apply your information and resources for later needs will be shared.

Donicé Kaufman served as Director of Disability Integration and Development for Leadership Foundry, a division of TSM Corporation. In her position she developed a curriculum and facilitated leadership training for HR and corporate management on the inclusion of people with disabilities in the workplace.  The goal of her trainings was to provide the self-awareness and direction to see beyond the disability to the value of each individual.

Prior to joining Leadership Foundry, Donicé served as Director of Wellness and Education at Bridges (formerly League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing), a nonprofit agency in Nashville, Tennessee.  In that capacity, she worked directly with the deaf, hard of hearing and hearing. Concerned with the lack of education and understanding of the language and cultural needs of individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or deaf-blind in emergency preparedness, Donicé established the EARS Coalition (Emergency Awareness and Readiness Services for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind). This collaboration consists of representative stakeholders from over 23 emergency planning and response agencies.  Donicé was invited to speak on EARS best practices at the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) 2011 annual conference on disaster preparedness.  She currently serves as an Emergency Services Coordinator (ESC) for the Tennessee Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and an American Sign Language interpreter volunteer for the Davidson County Red Cross.
