The legal challenges of diversity in the workplace is an issue that every human resource professional needs to take control of to ensure optimal inclusion. Working with legal counsel in a positive way is a critical part of successful D&I initiatives. Join us for an interactive panel discussion with local attorneys to discuss legal issues and diversity the workplace.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Laws that specifically protect diversity in the workplace
  • The risks and rewards of workplace D&I programs
  • Preventive actions and effective D&I workplace policies

Biographies:
Joy Johnson-Carruthers, SHRM-SCP,
is a Master Trainer, Workforce Development Leader and diversity equity and inclusion advocate with over twenty years of experience developing high performing teams across the United States and abroad. Most recently named Diversity and Inclusion Professional of the Year, Joy is a MTSHRM board member and serves as the D&I Director.  Joy is a Learning & Development leader with HCA Healthcare/ HealthTrust and holds a Master of Cultural Studies from UCLA.  Joy lives in Nashville with her husband and enjoys tennis and shopping.

Mark Chen has been a Trial Attorney for more than ten years,with the Nashville Area Office, part of the Memphis District Office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. As a Trial Attorney, he advises EEOC investigators on their investigations, reviewing cases and making recommendations.  Mark also represents the EEOC in lawsuits which it has filed.  Before joining the EEOC, he practiced on his own and with a law firm.  

Charles Grant is a veteran litigator who has tried more than 50 jury trials to verdict in both federal and state courts, and represented numerous clients in mediation and arbitration proceedings across more than a dozen states. 

Sylvia D. Hall-Harden joined the United States Army in 1981 and began her now 37 years civil service career in 1983. Over the course of Sylvia’s management career, she has obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Park University in Parkville, Missouri; a Master’s Degree in Management and Human Resources from Houston Baptist University in Houston, Texas with a minor in English Literature; and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. Through her years working for the EEOC, Sylvia has gained a vast knowledge of the Laws enforced by the EEOC, it’s Mission, it’s Guidance on Diversity and Inclusion, and the Agency’s new Initiatives.
