Identifying Substance Use in the Workplace and How to Handle It
Presented by a Panel Discussion

This presentation will be a panel discussion focusing on three main components: (1.) Identifying substance use disorders in the workplace; (2.) Ensuring employees have access to treatment and the benefits of treatment versus termination; and (3.) Legal issues surrounding employers from an employee, treatment, and recovery standpoint.
Dr. Stephen Loyd previously served as the "Opioid Czar" for the TN Department of Mental Health and is now the Chief Medical Officer of Cedar Recovery. He is a renowned expert in the field of addiction and addiction treatment. Dr. Loyd will present on the indicators and signs of substance use in the workplace. Paul Trivette will present the benefits to a company of sending employees through a treatment/recovery program and Fred Bissinger will present on the legal aspects of substance use in the workplace.
Learning Objective Include:
1.Identify indicators of substance use or addiction in the work place
2. Understand the value of a strong EAP program and substance use healthcare benefits
3. Learn the various types of treatment available and how they correspond to the workplace
4. Recognize the application of the ADA as it relates to employees, treatment, and recovery
5. Identify legal risks associated with employees suffering from a substance use disorder

Biographies:
Dr. Stephen Loyd is the current Chief Medical Officer of Cedar Recovery, LLC and is an expert in the field of addiction medicine and addiction treatment. Prior to this role, Dr. Loyd served as the Medical Director of Substance Abuse Services for the Tennessee Department of Mental Health. He has been featured on The Today Show, New York Times, and NPR regarding his own recovery from addiction and his advoacy for reducing stigma and increasing access to care.
Paul Trivette is the Chief Strategy Officer of Cedar Recovery, LLC. Prior this role, Paul served as Vice President of Government Affairs for a multi-state outpatient addiction treatment company. With experience in the government affairs and lobbying sector, Paul has been involved with a number of pieces of legislation regarding both regulation and improving access to treatment. After having lost his father to drug addiction and seeing the effects of addiction during his time as law enforcement officer, Paul has dedicated the last six years to helping 'change minds' and destigmatize those with addiction.
Fred Bissinger is Regional Managing Member of the Nashville, Tennessee office of the firm, which he joined in 1999. His law practice includes an emphasis in handling employment discrimination and wrongful discharge matters at both the administrative level and in Federal and State Court litigation. His practice also includes an emphasis on ADA and FMLA compliance, as well as general liability matters. He received his Bachelor of Science, cum laude, in Economics from Washington & Lee University and his law degree from the Seton Hall University School of Law.
