A Case for Caregivers: Why a Caregiver Friendly Workplace is Essential to Employee Well Being
Presented by Grace Sutherland Smith,
Executive Director & Kayse Martin, Community Engagement Director, AgeWell Middle Tennessee

Martin Smith

With 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day through 2029, eldercare is on the rise & it’s impacting employees and costing employers.  This is an issue all employers are facing since 60% of caregivers of older adults are working professionals including 10 million millennials and 66 million adults ages 40 - 65 “sandwiched” between children and aging relatives.

Eldercare is costing employers in lost productivity, increased healthcare costs & employee retention, and most employers don’t even know it.  A 2019 Harvard Business School survey found the economics of care are misaligned in most companies.  Employees don’t get the support they need for their caregiving responsibilities and employers pay hidden costs, including turnover, rehiring, “presenteeism” and absenteeism.

AgeWell Middle Tennessee offers solutions for employers & working caregivers. During this session, we’ll review the findings from a 2019 MTSHRM survey.  We’ll share what we’ve learned from working caregivers: their daily challenges & concerns, how they communicate with management, & what resources they need.  And we’ll discuss how organizations can create a caregiver-friendly workplace and how doing so can benefit the mental, physical & emotional health of your teams by providing the right kind of supports.

Our goals are to better inform and equip employers to address the impact of elder caregiving, and to increase awareness of individualized support available for employees who are caring for elders.

Attendees will:

  • Learn about the overall landscape of elder caregiving as it relates to your business and employees
  • Recognize the impact & hidden costs of eldercare on employers
  • Identify supports to enhance eldercare knowledge and well being for your caregiving employees
  • Learn about resources that enable you to design a caregiver-friendly workplace culture
