In today’s work environment, companies face numerous challenges in hiring and retaining top talent. The candidate interview is a vital component of the hiring process, and effective interviews are now more important than ever. Employers must be knowledgeable about lawful and unlawful interview questions, and have considered how to respond to applicant questions concerning remote work options and mandatory vaccine policies. This session will highlight the tips, tools, and legal rules for candidate interviews.
Learning Objectives:
- Overview of lawful and unlawful interview questions;
- Review of current case law and EEOC guidance on hiring decisions;
- Best practices for handling timely interview concerns from candidates related to remote work, vaccine madidates, and more

Biographies:
Chris Barrett is a labor and employment attorney with significant experience in state and federal court employment litigation involving FLSA, ADA, Title VII, FMLA, THRA, and TDA claims. In addition, he has a background in administrative agency proceedings before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the United States Department of Labor, and the Tennessee Human Rights Commission including mediations and the drafting of position statements. Chris also has significant experience in matters involving restrictive covenants and trade secrets. Chris is a frequent author and presenter on employment law topics.
Meg Sutton is a shareholder with Baker Donelson. She defends local, regional and nationally-known employers in a broad range of employment matters, including the defense of cases under federal and state discrimination laws, against retaliation claims, and against claims for violation of the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Americans with Disability Act (ADA). Meg also litigates non-compete cases, and advises clients facing challenging workforce issues such as employee discipline, termination, and leave issues. Meg represents clients in both state and federal courts, and has accumulated significant trial experience on large litigation matters. Meg has been named a Mid-South Rising Star by Mid-South Super Lawyers since 2016 and has been named in the Best Lawyers in America “Ones to Watch” in Labor and Employment Law – Management.
